How To Write Explainer Video Script
So you want to create explainer video, and you know the first thing you need to tackle is script. If you new to this explainer video thing, I recommend to read our 5-Thinks-To-Know-Before-Creating-Explainer-Video to get you started.
What kind of script you might wonder, at this point we recommend to create a narrative script. Here you will write the script as you write letter to your audience. What message or topic you want to talk about, and why you write to them.
Based on the narrative script, you can then create a screenplay for each scenes. This is going to be helpful for the animator, if you already have visual idea for the video. However this is not mandatory, if you don’t have set of particular image, or open for ideas, then you can let the animator do the job for you.
But before you actually start writing, you want to determine how long the video will be. As rule of thumb 1-min video is around 125 words. You can think explainer video as trailer for your product or service. Show the audience why they should care, and hook them enough so they want to learn more.
If you are still not sure how long your video should be. We wrote an extensive article on what we thought the better length for explainer video Why-2-Min-Or-Less-Is-Better-For-Explainer-Video/
Now grab your pen and paper (or your macbook), and open the script by addressing your audience. The more specific the better, for example if you sell software for accounting manager, then you need to call them out with problem that they can relate.
You don’t need to dwell on the problem, short paragraph or two that can quickly grab your audience attention is best. Remember, the first 5-10 seconds of the video is going to determine whether the audience will continue to watch the rest of the video or not.
Now that you have their attention, you can introduce the product or service that will help solve their problem. Clearly call the brand name, and what it does, should do the job.
Next you want to explain the benefit of your product or service. Although features can sometime overlap with benefit, we prefer to avoid a long, generic list of “cool” features and instead focus on the benefit.
Once your audience know exactly what your product or service does, it's time to create a powerful Call to Action. This is where you tell your audience what to do next. You can simply ask them to visit your website, or do specific actions, i.e: ask them to call or sign up.
There you have it, this should help you write your explainer video script. And you can see actual examples implemented in videos by visiting our Portfolio page and watch some of our videos.
